Upholstery

When it comes to cleaning upholstery, dry-cleaning and water-based cleaning are the two most recognized methods.

The one chosen will be determined by the type of upholstery being cleaned, the degree of soiling and the type of soiling. There are a few types of fabrics and fibers that are not compatible with the wet cleaning process. These include polished cotton, rayon, velvet, and silk. Wet cleaning these materials can result in color bleeding, shrinkage or even fiber damage. Generally speaking, low-moisture extraction, done with water, can be used on most of today's fabrics achieving excellent results but should only be done by an experienced and certified technician. Low Moisture Water Extraction Method:

A safe, low moisture pre-conditioning agent or shampoo is applied to loosen the soils. Then a hand-held brush or sponge is used to gently agitate the dirt and grime loose. Afterwards, a low-moisture extraction process is performed to rinse and remove the soils along with the pre-conditioning agents leaving the fabric clean and fresh.  The fabric should only be lightly damp and dry in a few hours.

Dry-Cleaning Method:

Fabrics requiring the dry-cleaning methond can only be cleaned with a volatile dry-cleaning solvent. This method can be done one of two ways:  By using a specialized dry-cleaning extractor or cleaned by hand using a mist wipe technique.  The dry-cleaning method is safe for most fabrics however is least effective in removing water-based soils.  Generally, dry cleaning only removes oily soot and grime.

Dry-Wet-Dry Method:

This method is a combination of the two methods described above.  Some fabrics which are too delicate to extract with water and too dirty to clean with dry-cleaning will require a balance of the two common methods.  This can be a very effective cleaning process but must be done by a highly trained and certified technician.

Common Problems:

A common issue with upholstery cleaning is overwetting. Overly wet upholstery may shrink during the drying process and develop split seams. Another issue is bleeding. Depending on the fabric and the cleaning process used, some colors may bleed and permanently damage the upholstery. This is why Ayoub Carpet Service recommends Upholstery Cleaning be done by a trained and certified technician.

After Cleaning:  It is highly recommended to have a premium fabric protector applied to the freshly cleaned fabric to help keep the upholstery stay clean longer.  It also helps the fabric last longer and look better. 3M Scotchgard and Dupont Teflon are the two most recognized protectors on the market.
