We do NOT use only one way to clean oriental rugs. We feel that it is important to employ several cleaning methods in order to accommodate the vast array of hand and machine made rugs. Rug vs. carpet?
A “rug” is generally considered a moveable floor textile. A “carpet” is generally considered to be a wall-to-wall floor textile that is attached to the floor. In this piece we will focus on “rug” care.

Immersion/Hand-washed: A true hand-washing is a method of immersing the rug in cold water and scrubbing it with an approved wool-cleaning shampoo. After scrubbing, the rug is completely rinsed free of shampoo and dirt then put through a wringer, centrifuge or extraction process in order to wring out the rug. The rug is then hung in a climate controlled drying room for 12 - 15 hours or flat dried with lots of air movement.

Submersion cleaning: With this type of method, the rugs are placed in a large rug washing machine that go through a tumbling type process that emulsifies the soil. This method is very similar to the process of washing your clothes. Following the cleaning process, the rug will go through the same type of water extraction as in the hand washing technique above.

Surface Cleaning: This method is generally used for rugs that are susceptible to bleeding or shrinking. The rug is lightly sprayed with a neutral cleaning agent that is then brushed into the fiber for deep cleaning action. A cold water extraction process is then used to rinse cleaning agents and soils from the rug. This cleaning method is generally done on both the front and back of the rug to ensure complete cleaning.

Dry Cleaning: This method uses dry-cleaning solvents to clean very delicate rugs that could easily be damaged by one of the cleaning processes above. The dry-cleaning method is a very safe method however the cleaning results can be minimal.

*It's ALWAYS important, no matter what method of cleaning is done, that all rugs be thoroughly dusted to remove as much dry soil as possible.
