Herndon is named for the American naval explorer William Lewis Herndon. In the 1870s, many Northern Civil War veterans moved to tha area, attracted by low land costs. Herndon, Virginia became a dairy center and vacation destination for Washington DC residents and legislators. At the time of the 2000 census, Herndon had a population of approximately 21,500. It grew somewhat, to almost 22,000 by 2007. The median household income in Herndon, VA was approximately $72,900 in 2000.
