McLean is an unicorporated Virginia community created from the aggregation of two older communities, Langley and Lewinsville. The site was relatively remote from Washington until John McLean, publisher of the Washington Post funded the electrification of a train line and built a station where the railroad crossed Chain Bridge Road and named the station after himself. McLean contains a mix of very large homes, mansions and more modest suburban style homes and has a central shopping district with retail, offices and restaurants. McLean is directly adjacent to the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Highway Administration headquarters.
