Washington, District of Columbia was established as the national capitol with a land grant from Virginia and Maryland, although the Virginia portion was subsequently returned. According to the 2000 Census, the population of Washington DC was 572,100 and it is estimated to have risen by 2008 to 591,800. Much of the city's downtown is dominated by monumental federal buildings, many in a classic revival style, but on a scale never imagined by the Greeks or Romans. Washington DC is laid out in a series of circles linked by diagonal boulevards, over a grid pattern of streets. Many of the circles sport statues, predominantly of Union generals from the Civil War. Washington DC lies on the north bank of the Potomac River and on both sides of the Anacostia River.
